Constraint Handling Rules with Binders, Patterns and Generic Quantification

Constraint Handling Rules provide descriptions for constraint solvers. However, they fall short when those constraints specify some binding structure, like higher-rank types in a constraint-based type inference algorithm. Impacto de los mercados financieros en el crecimiento económico del Ecuador

This paper investigates about the existence of a relation between Ecuador’s economic growth and financial markets development. Based on a time series analysis between the first quarter of 2002 and the second quarter of 2014 I use data for banking development, stock market development and financial depth. Through this I find a positive relationship between economic growth and banking development, while I find a negative relation with stock market development. This work emphasizes the importance of financial markets as a key factor for the country’s economy. Within financial markets, the banking sector stands out as one of the most important components for Ecuador’s economic growth.El presente trabajo investiga sobre la existencia de una relación entre el crecimiento económico del Ecuador y el desarrollo de los mercados financieros. Basándose en un análisis de series de tiempo entre el primer trimestre del 2002 y el segundo trimestre del 2014 se utilizan datos para el desarrollo bancario, desarrollo del mercado de valores y profundización financiera. A través de esto se encuentra una relación positiva entre el crecimiento económico y el desarrollo bancario, mientras que se encuentra una relación negativa con el desarrollo del mercado de valores. El trabajo hace énfasis en la importancia de los mercados financieros como un factor clave para la economía del país. Dentro de los mercados financieros se destaca el sector bancario, el cual muestra ser uno de los motores más importantes para el crecimiento del Ecuador

Towards an Abstract Domain for Resource Analysis of Logic Programs Using Sized Types

We present a novel general resource analysis for logic programs based on sized types.Sized types are representations that incorporate structural (shape) information and allow expressing both lower and upper bounds on the size of a set of terms and their subterms at any position and depth. They also allow relating the sizes of terms and subterms occurring at different argument positions in logic predicates. Using these sized types, the resource analysis can infer both lower and upper bounds on the resources used by all the procedures in a program as functions on input term (and subterm) sizes, overcoming limitations of existing analyses and enhancing their precision. Our new resource analysis has been developed within the abstract interpretation framework, as an extension of the sized types abstract domain, and has been integrated into the Ciao preprocessor, CiaoPP. The abstract domain operations are integrated with the setting up and solving of recurrence equations for both, inferring size and resource usage functions. We show that the analysis is an improvement over the previous resource analysis present in CiaoPP and compares well in power to state of the art systems.Comment: Part of WLPE 2013 proceedings (arXiv:1308.2055

The Genesis of a New Profession: Athletic Academic Counseling

This article reviews a brief history of the NCAA, changes in college athletics, and the establishment of N4A. At the time of this article, N4A was working to become a non-profit organization, develop a code of ethics, and create a certification program. The author argued for streamlined work environments across institutions, a national communication network of support for people in athletic advising roles, and the need for recognizition by institutions so they have professional credibility and respect to do their jobs accordingly

Athletic Academic Counseling: A Survey of Members of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics

The National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (NAAAA) has experienced rapid growth since its creation in 1976. In the past two years the association has doubled its membership. Presently there are 240 members (Monhagan, 1985). In an attempt to keep up with this fast growth and because of the youth of this organization of professionals, the need for research and investigation is imperative. The purpose of the survey was to identify trends and changes in the field of athletic academic counseling over the association's 10 years of existence. The author surveyed 112 advisors on 29 items. Findings showed there were more male counselors than females and males earn higher salaries, , just over half had masters degrees, and that more than half of respondents did not see athletic advising as a permanent career

Currency substitution in Latin America - lessons from the 1990s

The authors study how agents in Latin America allocate their balances between dollar-denominated and domestic currency-denominated accounts. They empirically determine the causes of currency substitution, its significance in recent banking crises, and the link between currency substitution, and volatility in macroeconomic aggregates. Their findings: The ratio of dollar deposits to broad money is strongly influenced by expectations of depreciation. They show that depositors in Latin America face some uncertainty and frictions when making their portfolio decisions. They explore the macroeconomic consequences of a dollarized economy. In particular, they find that, in the presence of currency substitution, past banking crises are good predictors of future crises. In other words, having a highly dollarized economy, increases the response of the banking system when there is a bad shock, which halts the outflow of capital. Once an economy is in crisis, however, having more dollar-denominated deposits in the banking system, increases the probability of a longer crisis in the future, because it increases exchange rate exposure in an already weak banking system. Finally, they show that the volatility of macroeconomic variables linked to the financial system, increases whenever the economy becomes more dollarized, which in turn makes the choice of monetary targets more difficult.Macroeconomic Management,Fiscal&Monetary Policy,Economic Theory&Research,Banks&Banking Reform,Settlement of Investment Disputes

Avaluació de rendiment en plataformes virtualitzades

La motivació d'aquest projecte és establir quina és la diferència en quant a rendiment entre una màquina en format clàssic i una virtual, quan es tracta d'executar aplicacions d'alt rendiment (HPC). A partir de les conclusions extretes, es podrà decidir si és recomanable instal·lar aquest tipus d'aplicacions en servidors virtuals, o per contra, és millor instal·lar-les sobre plataformes clàssiques.La motivación de este proyecto es establecer cuál es la diferencia en cuanto a rendimiento entre una máquina en formato clásico y una virtual, cuando se trata de ejecutar aplicaciones de alto rendimiento (HPC). A partir de las conclusiones extraídas, se podrá decidir si es recomendable instalar este tipo de aplicaciones en servidores virtuales, o por el contrario, es mejor instalarlas sobre plataformas clásicas.The aim of this project is to establish the difference in performance between a machine and a virtual one when running a high performance computing (HPC).
